Good Life
This song was simply meant to be a feel-good song. It was written later in the process of recording, as I felt the album lacked simple, rootsy, happy, heart-songs. We needed an up-lifter, a bright, crisp, and fresh sound to counter balance the darker tones of some of the other songs on the album.
I think it’s a little cheesy. I would have really simplified production of this song if we had the time or budget, and still just might. To the dismay of co producer Greg Magers, this song was almost cut from the roster last minute. And I’d still really like to redo my vocals Greg.
Nonetheless, Rachele Eve and Aviva Jaye both killed the backup vocals, and Chihsuan Yang played lovely upon the Erhu, which is that ghostly sounding instrument you hear around the middle of song and during the outro.
lyrics
“The Good Life” Matthew Santos
The good life / it starts with people. (melody answers)
It’s rather / rather simple. (melody answers)
A vision / inspires movement, (melody answers)
Before you know it / it’s life improvement. (melody answers)
I’ve always been / an avid dreamer. (may we dance together)
But sometimes / life pulls too hard. (don’t let it pull you under)
We all need / a friend to lean on, (I won’t be an anchor)
Who won’t let / our dreams discard. (I will push you further)
No one said it’d be easy!
But we are not alone.
solo
This heart ache / won’t last forever. (like coals in the fire)
And I’ll partake / whatever’s clever. (with your feet skin naked)
Without love / life is a winter. (you walk further, further)
Without hope / a sharp decline. (to…the other side)
