Day of Our Day Dreaming
Another last minute revival, this song felt extremely out of place until the rest of the album came together. It’s an amped up, funky epic unlike any song I’ve ever heard or written, which may have been the reason for it feeling like it didn’t fit on the album at first. A few essential last minute tweaks and it suddenly became one of my favorites.
Its meaning or message can be interpreted in many ways, which is something I love about songwriting. The essential message I was trying to express was that we don’t know when our end will come, so instead of dreaming about the things we’d like to do with our lives, we should just go out and do them before it’s too late.
lyrics
“Day of Our Day Dreaming” by Matthew Santos
Brother once stopped me from my walking,
He said he had a question he had to ask.
“Do you know the way to Hallelujah?
Because I got lost and I don’t wanna’ be last!”
And I didn’t have an answer for this stranger,
I said, “Sorry man, but I hope you find your way!”
Then he started laughing like a hyena,
Said, “Boy that’s the best answer I’ve heard all day!”
Mr. Seeker wished me luck he said,
“Mr. Seeker don’t get stuck.”
Suzy’s in a Cadillac going somewhere,
Cruising down the interstate ain’t looking back.
She talks a lot of big dreams over the ocean,
It’s never been the big dreams that she’s lacked.
Long wind Suzy’s free at last.
Long Wind Suzy has no past.
Stare into the twilight cold wind blowing,
There it awaits us in the dark.
Then upon our last breath it’ll come claiming,
Just hope that my last breath is filled with heart.
Any day could be our last
So live it well before it’s past.
Any day could be our last
So live it well before it’s past.
We’ll dance to moonshine,
Leaving our widows and
We’ll dance to moonshine
Playing the violin.
See how we’ve wasted
The day in our Daydreaming
look how we fade
into nothing…
