about

Daughter of the Sun
Written around 2005, this song was inspired by a friend who was struggling with depression. It was an attempt to further understand the state of depression, while trying to reach through the veil to uplift her spirits.

This track is probably one of my favorites on the album. The intro of the song has an isolated, groggy, and submersed texture to it that reveals the dark setting of the subject matter. Nelson’s piano solo during bridge is incredible as it really embodies the spirit of the bridge, which is to feel vibrantly alive. The whole band really shines bright on this track.

lyrics

“Daughter of the Sun” by Matthew Santos

(capo 1st fret)

Seven ravens sing your dark chorus
In the Garden of Dorian Grey.
Pay no mind to the arousing song,
‘Cause they always fade away.

The morning comes without her Glory,
The wake is slow to rise.
Is this is how you wish to live your story?
With a fog over your eyes.
Blind to the day…

Eleanor! You are mistaken,
You’re a daughter of the sun!
Life is just as you take it,
It’s what you make it
Nothing more.

Eleanor! You must awaken,
You’ve been sleeping so long.
Your life is passing you by,
You can’t ignore it,
Eleanor.

If I could shake you from this darkness,
If I could just understand…
If I could write a song to lift your spirit,
Lend you the strength of heart and hands.
But now I say…

(Chorus)

(Bridge)

(mellow chorus recap)
